Understanding International Tuition for Online Business Degrees

How fee categories, billing bases, intake years and currencies work in online business degree pricing, and why two tuition figures are rarely directly comparable.

Updated October 11, 2026 · Online Business Schools editorial team

Tuition for an online business degree looks like a single number on a program page, but that number almost always carries hidden conditions: who it applies to, what unit it is charged per, which intake year it belongs to, what it leaves out, and which currency it is in. Two figures that differ on any of those points cannot be compared directly. This guide explains each condition so you can read a fee table the way the institution intended.

Fee categories: who pays which rate

Many institutions charge different students different amounts for the same online degree. The category usually depends on citizenship, residency or both, and the labels change by country.

  • Home and international (UK). The University of Birmingham lists its online MBA at £28,140 for UK/Ireland students for 2026–27. The University of Essex Online lists its MSc Business with Finance at £13,206 for UK students and £13,884 for international students in the same year.
  • Domestic and international (Australia, New Zealand, Canada). Massey University lists 2027 tuition for its Bachelor of Business at NZ$7,860 for domestic students and NZ$39,230 for international students, as an estimate for full-time study of 120 credits.
  • Several categories for one program. The University of New England shows three 2027 rates for its MBA: a Commonwealth Supported Place at A$16,252 (quotas apply), a domestic full fee of A$29,136, and A$20,000 for international students studying online from outside Australia. The page notes that only international students studying online from outside Australia are eligible for that reduced fee.
  • In-state and out-of-state (USA). Public US universities often price by state residency. FIU Online lists its BBA in Finance at $235.57 per credit hour in-state and $758.38 out-of-state, plus additional fees. UMGC lists its BS in Accounting at $337 per credit in-state, $499 out-of-state and $250 for military students.
  • EU and non-EU (Ireland). Atlantic Technological University lists total fees of €4,200 for EU students and €5,040 for non-EU students on its online part-time Bachelor of Business (Honours).
  • Country bands. The University of London's 2026–27 Global MBA fee schedule sets a full course fee of £13,697 for Band A countries and £20,770 for Band B countries, so your country of residence decides your price.

Flat online rates

Some programs charge everyone the same. Arizona State's W. P. Carey School lists its online MBA at $74,000 for residents, nonresidents and international students alike. Oregon State Ecampus states there is no additional charge for nonresident students in its online business degree. A flat rate removes the category question, but you still need to check the basis and what is included.

Billing basis: per credit, per module, per term or per program

The unit a fee is charged in matters as much as the amount.

BasisExample from official pages
Per creditASU Online lists $580 per credit hour for most undergraduate programs in 2026–27, plus program fees
Per module or unitSouthern Cross University Online lists its MBA at A$3,250 per unit, 16 units, A$52,000 total
Per term (flat)WGU lists $3,850 per six-month term for its B.S. Business Management
Per yearMassey's figures above are estimates for a full-time year
Per programBirmingham's £28,140 is a total programme cost

Some institutions combine bases. Capella University prices its BS in Business per credit in its GuidedPath format and at $2,575 per 12-week billing session in its FlexPath format. Penn State World Campus charges per credit up to 11 credits a semester and a flat semester rate from 12 to 19 credits. A per-credit figure only becomes a total when you multiply it by the credits you will actually take, which depends on transfer credit and pace; see comparing credits and duration.

What the figure includes

Read the words around the number. ASU's per-credit rates are stated as "plus program fees." Auburn's online BSBA degree completer lists tuition of $603 per credit hour and a separate professional fee, bringing its stated 63-credit total to $41,013 for 2026–27. Warwick Business School says its Global Online MBA fee covers registration, study materials, tuition, examinations and the graduation ceremony, but not residential accommodation, meals or travel. The University of London notes that exam fees depend on whether you sit an exam online or in an exam centre.

Local taxes can apply on top of tuition. Imperial College Business School states that if you are normally resident and studying in a territory that levies a Goods and Services Tax, it reserves the right to charge that tax in addition to tuition; it names Singapore and India as current GST territories.

Intake year and price changes

Tuition is published for a specific academic year or intake. Georgetown's real estate master's page shows a per-credit rate of $1,685 for Summer 2026 and $1,752 for Fall 2026 and Spring 2027. Warwick lists different Global Online MBA fees for its January 2027 and June 2027 intakes. A per-credit rate can also rise during a multi-year program, so check whether a program total is locked in or recalculated each year.

Currencies, and why we do not convert

Fees in our directory appear exactly as each institution publishes them: in US dollars, pounds, euros, Australian, Canadian or New Zealand dollars, rand and other currencies. We do not convert them, for three reasons:

  1. Exchange rates move. A converted figure is only accurate on the day it is calculated, while the institution's own number stays fixed for its stated year.
  2. You pay in the institution's terms. What leaves your account depends on your bank, card or transfer service, its rate and its fees, and when each installment is charged.
  3. Conversion hides the conditions. A converted per-credit fee placed next to a converted program total looks comparable when it is not.

When you compare programs on our compare page, we show each fee with its category, basis, year and currency side by side instead of reducing them to one number. How we record fees is described in our methodology.

A checklist for reading a fee table

  • Which category applies to you, and on what evidence (citizenship, residency, where you study from)?
  • Is the amount per credit, per module, per term, per year or for the whole program?
  • How many credits or modules will you actually take after any transfer credit?
  • Which academic year or intake is it for, and can it change during your studies?
  • What is excluded: program fees, exam fees, residential travel, taxes?
  • Which currency is it in, and how will you pay it?

Funding can lower what you pay, but scholarships, discounts and loans work differently; see scholarships for online business students and our scholarships listings.
