Scholarships and Funding for Online Business Students

How institutional scholarships, tuition discounts, employer funding and government loans work for online business degrees, and why fully funded online places are rare.

Updated October 11, 2026 · Online Business Schools editorial team

Funding for an online business degree comes in several forms that are easy to confuse on a program page: scholarships, fellowships, tuition discounts, employer sponsorship, grants and loans. They differ in whether you repay them, who can receive them and when the decision is made. This guide explains each form with examples from official pages, so you can see what a funding line actually offers.

Scholarships and fellowships

A scholarship or fellowship reduces what you pay and is not repaid. For online business degrees, most are offered by the institution itself and cover part of tuition. They tend to fall into three patterns.

Automatic consideration. You apply for the degree and are considered for an award at the same time. Syracuse's Whitman School says all admitted students in its online master's programs are automatically considered for partial merit-based scholarships. The University of Florida's online master's in international business mentions a limited number of merit and need-based scholarships from $500 to $5,000 for newly admitted students.

Named awards with their own criteria. Durham University Business School lists named scholarships for its online MBA for 2027 entry, including a Global Leadership Scholarship of £17,500 (a 50% tuition fee discount) and a Social Impact Scholarship of up to £15,000, aimed at self-funded applicants. Imperial College Business School lists awards for its Global Online MBA of up to 50% of the tuition fee. Warwick Business School says its Global Online MBA scholarships are between 10% and 35% of the tuition fee.

Competitive or performance-based awards. Gies College of Business describes a competitive Gies–Coursera Scholarship covering 70% of tuition for its iMBA and two other online master's programs. FIU awards performance-based scholarships of up to $10,000 to Professional MBA Online students based on GPA once they complete their first 10 courses, so the award comes after you have started paying. UMass Amherst says three scholarships are available through its online MBA, with applications accepted in the spring.

For each award, check who is eligible, whether a separate application and deadline apply, and whether it renews each year or is a one-time reduction.

Discounts

A discount is a fixed reduction for a defined group, usually without competition.

  • Alumni discounts. The University of Liverpool lists a 10% discount on its online MBA for its alumni; UMass Amherst offers its alumni 10 percent off course tuition for the Isenberg Online MBA.
  • Tuition caps. Capella University describes a Tuition Cap under which you will not pay more than $45,000 in tuition for its doctoral degree, with eligibility rules and exclusions and a start-date limit stated on the page.
  • Category rates. Some institutions publish lower rates for groups such as military students. These are fee categories rather than scholarships; see understanding international tuition.

Employer funding

Many online business students are working, and employers sometimes pay part or all of the fee. Indiana University's Kelley School says students may have tuition billed to a third-party sponsor such as their employer. The University College of Estate Management notes that many employers sponsor employees on its degrees. Employer support is set by each employer, not by the university, so ask for the policy and any conditions in writing before you enroll. Kelley, for example, notes that a third party cannot be billed directly if payment is conditional, such as on grades.

Loans are not scholarships

A loan pays your fee now and you pay it back later, usually with interest. GOV.UK states that you start repaying a Postgraduate Master's Loan when your income is over a threshold and that interest is charged from the day you get the first payment.

Government loans and grants are tied to residency, and online study does not remove that link:

  • UK Master's Loan. GOV.UK states that to qualify for distance learning you need to be living in England on the first day of the first academic year of your course, and to keep living in England (EU nationals) or the UK (others) for the whole course. The University of Birmingham notes that the loan is available for distance learning master's programs.
  • Australia. Southern Cross University explains that you are eligible for FEE-HELP, an Australian Government loan scheme, if you meet the government's citizenship and residency requirements.
  • Scotland. Robert Gordon University refers Scottish-domiciled students on its online BA to the SAAS Part-Time Fee Grant, a grant rather than a loan.
  • US federal aid. The University of London states that US citizens and eligible non-citizens do not qualify for federal student aid or military education benefits for its online programs, because of the online format.

A "funding options" box that lists loans alongside scholarships does not make the loan free money. Count only non-repayable awards as reductions in cost.

What "fully funded" means, and why it is rare

A fully funded place covers all tuition and sometimes living costs. Large government programs exist; Study Australia describes scholarships, grants and bursaries from the Australian Government, education providers and public and private organizations. Those programs are designed around their own eligibility rules, so read them carefully before assuming they apply to online study from outside the country.

For online degrees, the institutional awards in this guide are partial: 10% to 35% at Warwick, up to 50% at Imperial and Durham, and 70% for the competitive Gies–Coursera award. We do not use the term "fully funded" for a program unless the institution's own page states it, and we do not suggest any award is likely.

How to search and apply

  1. Start from the program page and its fees page; many scholarships are listed only there.
  2. Note each award's eligibility (self-funded, residency, prior degree, alumni status), amount and deadline.
  3. Check whether a scholarship deadline is earlier than the admission deadline.
  4. Ask whether awards can be combined, for example a scholarship with an alumni discount.
  5. Recalculate the net cost in the program's own currency and basis.

Our scholarships page lists awards recorded from official sources, and each program on the compare page shows its funding entries separately from tuition. How we record them is explained in our methodology.
