Studying Online Across Time Zones: Live Sessions, Exams and Planning
How synchronous and asynchronous online business degrees schedule live classes, attendance rules and exams, and how to check whether a program fits your time zone.
Updated October 11, 2026 · Online Business Schools editorial team
An online business degree can be studied from anywhere, but it is usually run on one institution's clock. Live classes, group work, assessment windows and exams are scheduled in the time zone of the school or of most of its students. Whether that works for you depends on how much of the program is live, whether attendance is required, and how exams are delivered. This guide shows how to read those details on a program page.
Synchronous, asynchronous and mixed delivery
Asynchronous programs let you study on your own schedule within deadlines. Heriot-Watt describes its online MBA as self-paced, with open enrolment and a flexible pace.
Synchronous programs meet live at set times. Many online business degrees sit in between, combining recorded material with scheduled sessions:
- UNC Kenan-Flagler's online MBA delivers lectures and new material asynchronously and holds weekly virtual meetings synchronously.
- Kelley Direct's online MBA includes two live classes per week.
- Durham's online MBA runs live webinars in real time and records them, so you can catch up when you cannot attend.
- Coventry's online Global Business MBA has optional two-hour live sessions, typically between 9 and 5 GMT, which are recorded.
The words "optional" and "recorded" matter most if you will be studying far from the institution. A recorded optional session is a convenience; a required live session sets your calendar.
Whose clock? Reading live-session times
When a program publishes live-session times, it states them in its own time zone. Examples from official pages:
| Program | Stated live schedule |
|---|---|
| University of Edinburgh, Online MBA | Tutorials aimed for Wednesdays, 12:00 to 14:00 UK time, where possible |
| Georgetown, Online MBA | Weekdays, 6:30–9:20 p.m. ET |
| Syracuse, online master's programs | Classes offered six days a week, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. ET |
| University of Fredericton, MBA | One live class per course each week, Monday–Thursday evenings, no earlier than 6:30 p.m. EST |
| University of Denver, Online Executive Master's in Real Estate and Construction Management | Once per week, 5:30–7:30 p.m. MT |
| ATU, Bachelor of Business (Honours), online part-time | Two evenings a week for 1–2 hours, between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m., Monday to Thursday |
An evening slot in one zone can fall during the working day or the middle of the night in another. Convert each time to your own zone, and check it again for the other half of the year if either location changes its clocks seasonally.
Some programs set the limit for you. Georgetown states that its online MBA is strictly for students who reside in time zones within plus or minus three hours of Eastern Time. ATU's MSc in Digital Media and Marketing sets a weekly live attendance requirement of two lunchtime hours and one evening hour, plus two full days of live online attendance a month during its teaching months.
Attendance rules
A live session is only a constraint if you must attend. Look for a stated attendance rule in program regulations, not just the marketing page. The University of London's 2026–27 regulations for its online BSc degrees say that students on the Online Taught route must attend at least 80% of live sessions throughout the course. A rule like that turns a convenient evening session in London into a fixed weekly commitment for students elsewhere. Where a rule exists, ask how absences are handled: whether a recording, a written task or a different session can count instead, and what happens if you fall below the threshold because of the time difference.
Exams and assessment windows
Exams can bind you to a time and a place even when teaching is asynchronous.
- Assessment periods. Heriot-Watt assesses its online courses through Final Online Assessments taken in three assessment periods a year, which it says you can take wherever you are in the world.
- Online or exam centre. The University of London says its exams may be sat online or in an exam centre, with fees depending on where you sit them.
- Invigilation options. Athabasca University requires exams to be supervised by an approved invigilator, either online through ProctorU or at a physical location.
- Residence-based rules. ATU says some modules on its online business bachelor's have final exams that students resident in Ireland must attend in Sligo or Dublin, while students resident overseas may apply to take exams online with an external invigilation service.
- No exams. The University of Southern Queensland states that its MBA has no exams.
For each exam, check the time zone it is scheduled in, whether the start time is fixed or the exam is open for a window, and what technology the invigilation service requires.
Planning your study from another country
- List every fixed commitment. Live classes, group meetings, residencies, exams and defenses. Programs with no campus requirement can be filtered on our programs page.
- Convert times in both seasons. Check the times again in the other half of the year.
- Read the attendance rule. Recorded and optional is different from required.
- Check exam delivery for your country. Ask whether online invigilation or local exam centres are available where you live.
- Ask about group work. Team assignments with classmates across zones may need meetings outside the scheduled sessions.
- Check deadlines' time zone. When a submission deadline or application deadline gives a time, confirm which zone it refers to.
How delivery formats differ more broadly is covered in fully online vs. hybrid programs. Browse master's and bachelor's programs, or use the compare page to see each program's recorded schedule and any live-session times side by side.
