Fully Online vs. Hybrid: What Online Business Programs Really Require

How to tell a fully online business degree from one with required campus weeks, inductions, exam-center visits, placements or in-person defenses, and how to read program pages.

Updated October 11, 2026 · Online Business Schools editorial team

"Online" on a business-degree page can mean very different things. Some programs can be completed without ever traveling. Others require an induction week on campus, residential weeks, exams at a test center, a local internship or an in-person defense. These requirements are not good or bad in themselves, but you need to know about them before you apply, especially if you live far from the campus or need a visa to travel there.

The four delivery categories we use

Every program in our directory carries one delivery label, based on what its official pages state:

LabelWhat it means
Fully onlineNo required on-site activity is stated
Online with placementsA required internship or placement, usually arranged locally
Online with campus visitsRequired campus visits, residential weeks, in-person exams or an in-person defense
HybridOnline-led, but with substantial in-person teaching

"Fully online" is based on what the pages say. When a school does not mention campus visits at all, we record campus visits as unknown, not as "none." Only programs whose official pages explicitly rule out required visits appear under no required campus visits. The University of Massachusetts Amherst is an example of a clear statement: "Residency is not a part of the requirement as the Online MBA is 100% online and can be done from anywhere in the world," for its Isenberg Online MBA.

Inductions and orientations

Many programs start with an orientation. The key question is whether it happens online or on campus:

  • Imperial College Business School says the Global Online MBA's "programme induction week is a compulsory element" and that it expects students "to attend on campus in London."
  • Kansas State University's online Professional MBA includes "two-day student orientation held on the Manhattan, Kansas campus," which new students are required to attend.
  • The University of Florida's Online MBA states: "Outside of orientation, Online MBA students aren't required to come to Gainesville."

A single required trip at the start is a different commitment from repeated residencies, but it is still travel you need to plan and pay for.

Residential weeks and immersions

Residencies bring an online cohort together on campus or in another city, often for a week:

  • Warwick Business School's Global Online MBA says "Residential weeks typically run in March/April and September in your first year of study."
  • Georgetown's Online MBA describes one week in Washington, D.C. "in August of their first year and October of their second year," plus an international course "required of all MBA students."
  • Robert Gordon University's MBA lists travel and accommodation during its Leadership Week as an additional cost.

Many other programs offer residencies or international trips as optional extras. Read carefully: the same page may describe both required and optional travel. Check who pays for travel and accommodation; program fees often exclude them.

Exams: online, proctored or at a test center

Assessment is where "online" programs most often surprise students:

  • Online, taken anywhere. Heriot-Watt says its online courses are assessed by "Final Online Assessments which you can take wherever you are in the world."
  • Supervised, flexible location. Athabasca University says students "have options of where they can write their AU exams, but they must be supervised by an AU-approved invigilator/proctor."
  • Exam centers, with exceptions. Atlantic Technological University's online MSc Marketing has some final exams, held in January and May at the campus or another exam venue in Ireland. For its online business bachelor's, ATU says students resident overseas "may apply to take examinations online with an external online invigilation service."

When a program uses exam centers, check where they are, how often exams run and whether remote proctoring is available from your country.

Placements and doctoral defenses

Placements and work-integrated learning

Some programs require practical experience. The University of Florida's online BA in Business Administration states that "students must also complete a business internship course and a minimum 150-hour, pre-approved internship." Requirements like this are usually completed where you live, but you may need to find the placement yourself and have it approved. We label these programs "online with placements."

Doctoral defenses and residencies

Doctoral programs add their own requirements. Aston University's online Executive DBA thesis is "examined in an online viva voce examination." Grand Canyon University's online DBA in Marketing includes a residency in which "learners orally present and defend an expanded design of their preliminary dissertation research," and states that learners "are expected to participate in two in-person residency experiences." See PhD vs. DBA for more on doctoral structures.

When "online" becomes hybrid

Some programs describe themselves as blended. Griffith College's BA (Hons) Business (Blended), for example, combines weekly video lectures and monthly live webinars with "one/two Saturday classes per month - which will take place in Dublin," and exams in Dublin, Cork or Limerick. When in-person teaching is that regular, the program depends on regular travel to the campus, even if most content is online. We hold programs like this for editorial review rather than listing them as online.

Live online sessions are a separate question from campus attendance. ATU's MSc in Digital Media and Marketing is online, but it has "a monthly live online attendance requirement" of two full days per month. Fixed live sessions affect students in other time zones; see studying online across time zones.

How to read a program page

  1. Search for the words that signal obligation: "required," "compulsory," "mandatory," "must attend," and their opposites, "optional" and "not required."
  2. Watch for "may" language. Massey University says "Some courses have compulsory contact workshops," and the University of New England says "Mandatory intensive schools on campus may be a requirement of some of the units." These depend on the units you choose, so check each unit or course page.
  3. Read the assessment section, not just the overview. Exam location is often only stated there.
  4. Check the fees page for residency fees and whether travel is included.
  5. Check visa implications if you would have to travel. Online enrollment may not support a student visa: UMass Amherst states that students on F-1 and J-1 visas "are not eligible to enroll in this degree program as it is an entirely online program."
  6. Ask in writing if the page is silent. A missing statement is not the same as "no campus visits."

Our program pages list each attendance requirement separately, with its frequency, location and source, so you can compare them directly. The methodology explains how we assign the labels.
